Letter of Support: Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho

It is with great enthusiasm that I voice my support for Hawaii Dairy Farms, the state’s first-ever pasture- based dairy located in Mahaulepu, Kauai. Hawaii Dairy Farms will bring milk production back to Kauai and directly contribute to our island’s food security, economic diversity, and sustainability.

I support Hawaii Dairy Farms because:

  • It will utilize New Zealand’s grass-fed dairy model, which is clean, cost-effective, and sustainable compared to the traditional feedlot dairy that was in operation on Kauai in the past. The grass-fed model produces fewer odors and will be a zero-discharge system.
  • It will preserve the use of our agricultural lands, and in fact, will be the first use of Important Agricultural Lands on Kauai. Additionally, the dairy farm will rejuvenate and increase soil productivity in former sugar cane lands.
  • It will utilize state-of-the-art technology to ensure healthy cows, fertile land, and nutritious milk.
  • It will employ 10-15 full-time positions and utilize services and expertise from local suppliers and ranchers.

I am encouraged by recent discussions between the Hawaii Dairy Farms team and various members and groups in the community to share information about their plans and operations. Community input and understanding is important: mahalo to all of the leaders and community members who have engaged in this conversation. I am confident that through this dialogue mutual understanding and support for the project will be achieved.

Hawaii Dairy Farms’ operations are truly a step in the right direction toward sustainability for our Garden Island. I am proud that Kauai can be home to a world-class dairy farm that will benefit our families, and especially our keiki, for years to come.

Me ke aloha pumehana,

Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr., Mayor
